Whilst I don't want to release my code execution solution yet, I have made my PS4-SDK open source, and will try to explain everything I have managed to do with it. This article is less focused on exploitation, and more on what is possible with userland code execution under the WebKit process. After gaining kernel code execution, I've gone back to this article to update some of the uncertainties I had whilst researching with just userland code execution.
I've also since posted the method for gaining userland code execution, along with a ROP chain to load binaries sent over TCP; it is explained in part 3 of this series. As explained in my previous article, ROP is just executing existing code loaded in memory in a smart way; whilst ROP can technically be Turing-completeit really isn't practical for anything more complex than some basic tests.
With the help of flatz, I've been able to leverage ROP to setup memory in such a way that I can write my own code into it, and execute it. Whilst this is big progress, we are still running within the Internet Browser, and have the same restrictions as before like sandboxing. As a little side note; with the recent release of LLVM 3. As stated in my previous article, the Internet Browser actually consists of 2 separate processes. Within this dump, you won't be able to find strings used by the other process, such as "Options", "Close Window", "Refresh", or "There is not enough free system memory".
One of the main implications of this is clear: if the other process handles displaying graphics, we can't easily hijack the active libSceVideoOut handle.
I've been working with xerpi to try to reinitialise libSceVideoOutbut even though all functions are returning good values, we can't get the screen to change from the browser view. Just to be certain that our process can't access any existing video handles created by the other process, we tried brute forcing all positive integers to see if any were valid. Brute forcing things with the ROP framework was very impractical.
With real code execution, we can try to brute force more ambitious things, such as a video handle that the Internet Browser has opened.
And we can use sockets to track the progress remotely from a PC. After running this for several hours it returned 0, confirming that our process has no access to the other process' video handle. There is a partial solution to this though. If we create an HTML5 canvas and fill it with a single colour, we can find the address of its framebuffer in RAM, and create a new thread to render to it from native code, leaving the original thread to update the canvas as normal. One of the worst situation PS4 users may encounter is that when the PS4 hard drive fails.
While most components of a PS4 are electrical, the hard disk is one of the few mechanical parts. Thus, it will inevitably fail at some point. This type of failure occurs when the read-write head or other components become faulty as a result of normal wear and tear. How to upgrade the PS4 with a SSD - HyperX
Many factors can contribute to logical failure, including malware infections, human error and corrupted files. Sometimes the failure can be extensive enough that the system will not boot up. There are several different types of PS4 hard drive failure.
There are also more subtle PS4 HDD failures, where the drive appears to be working, but there are problems. Your PS4 may occasionally freeze, you may hear unusual sounds from the drive, or you may experience data corruption. Any sort of clicking noise from a mechanical drive is a bad sign.
This indicates the head, which reads and writes the data from the platters on the drive, has failed. Hard disk failure refers to a situation when a hard disk drive starts malfunctioning and the stored information becomes inaccessible. Unluckily, a hard disk drive has a limited lifespan. The normal lifespan of the hard disk drive is somewhere between years.
It simply depends on how much work the hard disk drive does on a day-to-day basis. Also, the environmental conditions play an essential role in determining the lifespan of the hard disk drive. Being a hardware device, the hard disk drive is prone to severe issues and faults. PS4 hard drive failure is one of the most annoying situations you can ever face. Hard drives are susceptible to failure in a number of ways, so the symptoms of a failing hard disk can vary.
It should be noted that some of the symptoms below can also be signs of other problems, and are not necessarily indicative of a hard drive failure. Many people like to encrypt their hard drive on Windows in order to protect personal data from being stolen by others. I want make own pfs reader for ps4 and can't find raw dump of harddrive for testing and not have the opportunity to do so yourself. May be any one can upload this? This is pointless my friend. Internal mass storage in PS4 is encrypted by keys which we don't know how to obtain and by algos which we also don't know. In PS3 Sony uses custom?
It is quite possible that this is similar solution implemented in PS4. PFS encryption is something different, works on higher level on the files not on filesystem itself. BerionJan 30, You cannot edit encrypted file because the encryption is unknown on filesystem level. PFS encryption is also undefeated I only heard that it's possible to extract decrypted cached data by the system itself. I have fw 5. So, sorry.
Chance that You will brute force anything is unlikely. Used keys are for sure at least bit or more. File manager running on OrbisOS have nothing to do with any encryption.
Filesystem encryption is transparent for anything on this layer and PFS encryption is nothing which is worth concern because file manager managing files not editing files. If You want create file manager running on PC for i. I cannot understand what You exactly want to do.
Please, explain. Last edited: Jan 30, I understand. But on psdevwiki written information about partitions, I think exist small partition without personal data or may by someone can send dump in private message If write random data over of encrypted files on pc then on ps4 we retrieve random decrypted data. In bad case for 1 byte valid decrypted on ps4 we do times to write down and we not using private key.
May be we can write symlink to bmp for example, but bmp will contain file manager - elf file, not image. BerionFeb 1, I think he want to use Elfin magic. Berion likes this.
