Dressing up and playing pretend can actually be a powerful tool in the hands of the ESL teacher. Role play breaks up the monotony of book work and is a great way to practice or review skills. What better way to see if students really understand how to use those new vocabulary words, verb tenses and sentence structures? So, be sure to pre-teach any necessary vocabulary and allow them to practice their dialogues, if needed.
You can always add more elements of fun by allowing students to dress up and allowing lots of improv! In order for students to be successful, it is important to pre-teach some of the more common phrases students might encounter.
For the actual role play, divide the class into small groups. Students should take turns being the server or guest. Circulate to make sure students are using the phrases correctly and instruct the students when to switch roles. Description: Most people will find themselves in a taxi at some point in their lives. He or she is new and the passenger has to tell them how to get to their desired location! With this ESL role play topic, students have the opportunity to practice giving and clarifying directions.
Again, it can be adapted for different ages and learning levels. Be sure to pre-teach vocabulary and phrases like stating an address in the proper order: first the number, then street name. Students should use the pre-taught phrases to engage in a short dialogue about directions. It is best to give the class a time limit. Once time is up, the students should switch roles so that each student has the chance to be both driver and passenger.

Stay on the phone with the operator until help arrives. When paramedics arrive, have someone direct them to the scene and be prepared to communicate what happened.
This is a true emergency. The man must be cooled to keep him alive. Get him to a shady spot, fan him to cool him off and have him sip water. If you have them, apply ice packs or water-soaked compresses under his armpits and on his neck. Have him take off excess clothing. In the classroom, everyone knows you are a student and mistakes are allowed, and the environment is contained and safe. Speaking another language outside the classroom is completely different and often students are lost at sea as soon as they step outside the door. Lists of memorized vocabulary are suddenly useless when ordering in a restaurant. A simulation is where students act out a real-life situation, for example checking into at a hotel, but do not act out a different personality.
Role-plays are where students take on different personalities. Role-plays require more imagination by students and teacher and can be difficult to manage because they are unpredictable. The initial scenario develops from the students interacting with each other and can literally go in any direction.
This gives students practice in a non-threatening environment, and gives the motivation and involvement where they have to think in English. Role-plays are interesting, memorable and engaging, and students retain the material they have learned.
In their assumed role, students drop their shyness and other personality and cultural inhibitions, making them one of the best tools available for teaching a second language. Role-plays are unpredictable which makes them both a valuable learning tool and at the same time difficult to manage. Sketch out the various routes the role-play can take from the initial scenario.
