A few years back, a fellow musician needing money was selling some guitars, so I bought his Gitane John Jorgenson model. Prior to amplification, these instruments were very popular due to their unique ability to project acoustically with a lot of volume in the upper and mid-ranges, making single-line soloing possible while playing with a group.

The first thing that strikes me about the Gypsy jazz guitar style is that, whereas bebop and post-bop styles are somewhat scale oriented, the manouche style is much more focused on arpeggiation of the chords. Over the last few years, a number of my students have enjoyed learning and performing this transcription, and I hope that you will too! Learning the following will give you a solid foundation to build from:.

Try to find lines and prases that connect with a note from the next chord right on the downbeat. Leigh Jackson was born in England but moved to New Zealand in his teens.

As a guitarist, it is important to know about Django Reinhardt, as his contribution was profound and his influence far-reaching. Both survived the blaze but Django was badly injured. He suffered extensive damage to his left hand thereby greatly diminishing his ability to use his ring finger and pinky. During a long recovery period Django was able to relearn the instrument using his fretting-hand thumb and first two fingers. You can also see how he used the injured fingers to play certain chord shapes.

At first listen, this music seems daunting—especially given the virtuosity of the masters. To capture the sound of Gypsy jazz, a focus on the rhythm guitar is a must.

This is important because you must be able to control the ringing of the strings. To achieve this, release the pressure of your fretting fingers between each strum. This creates a little separation between beats. On beats 1 and 3, focus on picking only the bottom few strings, and on beats 2 and 4, strum all the notes of the chord. Because the typical Hot Club group lacks drums, the rhythm guitar sonically fills this role. By playing beats 2 and 4 with more snap of the wrist from your picking hand, you can achieve a snare drum-like sound that will help things groove.

Also note a common alternate fingering for the A chord. While barre chords are used in Gypsy-style comping, three-note voicings are also common and are relatively easy to play.

When playing this chord, be sure not to play the 1st, 2nd, and 5th strings. You can use your 2nd finger to block the 5th string, which allows you to strum through the shape. This chord has multiple functions, depending on which note you determine to be the root. Two common chord functions of this shape are the minor 6 chord and a rootless dominant 7.

You can see, in Fig. It's there for you to visualize the location of the root, allowing you to create other dominant 7 chords by moving the shape up or down the neck. For years I've dipped into his style, working out patterns and mixing them into my own playing of Blues, Ragtime and Jazz. I imersed myself in chords, scales, arpeggios and Django style doodles on the road to solving a little of the mystery. I know there are many volumes of transcriptions available which will help you but It can take years of study to become fluent in this style, and like many players, I felt I didn't have the time or patience.

I wanted to take the essence and some of the skills in his playing and make it my own. So, in 'Let's Django', I will share with you some of the Django secrets I have learned on my journey as a guitarist. The exercises and tunes will give your playing a whole load of gypsy flavour and, whatever the style of your playing, you will gain extra panache and appeal.

Like I said earlier, I know there are many note for note transcriptions of Django's famous tunes and I didn't want to reproduce them again here. The tunes here are fairly simple and are in the Django style, using the exercises you will learn on the way. Feel free to adapt them and most importantly use them in your own playing.

His ring finger and pinky were fused together, and this handicap forced Django to invent a new way of playing his guitar.

As a result of his injury, most of his chords were three- or four-note voicings. He could use his fused fingers to play one note or serve as a barre to play more than one note. He was also able to hold down two strings with each of his index and middle fingers. Adapting to his limitations led Django to develop a very distinctive approach to playing jazz chords. In early Gypsy swing, the ensembles were composed entirely of string players, usually two or three guitarists, violin, and bass.

There were no drums, which meant the rhythm guitarists provided the harmony, as well as the drum beat. Most of the chords in this example are of the three-note variety. The only four-note chord is the E7.

Measures one through four feature Am6 with its root on the 6th string, and Dm6 with its root on the 5th string. Minor 6 chords are used often in Gypsy jazz music instead of minor 7 chords. The formula for these two voicings, from low to high, is root—6—b3. Gypsy jazz has a distinctive diminished quality to it, which is achieved with the minor 6 chord.

If you take the notes from the Am6 chord and play them starting with the 6 Fyou get a diminished triad F —A—C. In this instance, the Bb7 is serving as a tritone sub for the E7 chord we play in measure 6. In measure 7 we return to our Am6 chord, which then changes to an A7 in measure 8.

The A7 voicing is based on the 6th-string shape. Measures 9 through 12 are Dm6 and Am6. The example ends with a double turnaround of Bb7—E7—Am6. The difference here is that the chords are now all four-note chords. We change the Bb7 to a Bb9 by placing the root on the 6th string and moving the 3 down a whole-step to the 9 C.

Gypsy players would also use this voicing as an Em6 chord 6—b3—5—1, from low to high. Remember to work on your pompe using downstrokes for the quarter-note pulse and upstrokes for the eighth-notes. The chord changes in Ex. The second chord is a Bb6 chord built on a new shape with the root on the 6th string.

Decoding Django’s Gypsy Chords

Another interesting point in this progression is the chromatic bass line that goes from Bb6 to Bdim7 to Cm6 starting in measure 4. Measures 1 through 5 are the same as before; in measure 6, however, I use that dual-purpose voicing from Ex.

Measure 7 uses an Eb9 chord to approach the D9 chord, instead of the Am6 chord we used earlier. This example resolves to the Gm6 chord in measure 8. In Ex.Butbefore we start, what are chords? A better answer, for our needs, than the basic definition of a chord as a set of at least three notes played together, would be to think of chords more as a suggestion, a code, an invitation to explore and create various sounds. If you play accompaniment for a song using the same few shapes in the same places on your fingerboard every time, then this article is for you.

I would like to invite you to expand your chord vocabulary and explore different sounds, making your accompaniment playing more interesting. How many shapes do you think of? A lot of us play one or two shapes all the time.

But you have so many options! Why be satisfied with two?

How to Play Gypsy Jazz Guitar Style

The aim of this lesson is to help you expand your chord vocabulary, using chord inversions. Minor chords — Chords you can play for all minor chords, whether they function as tonic or subdominant. Feel free to change the fingerings I use to make them comfortable for you. The following chord diagrams are all in the key of G. They suggest one chord shape for each inversion. The ability to improvise when you play accompaniment — playing accompaniment to a song a little bit differently — with different chord shapes, bass lines and colors each time, gives you two important skills for jazz playing:.

Knowing chord theory is very important if you want to expand your chord vocabulary further on. With this knowledge, you can change each chord, add colors and explore this magical world by yourself. There are many types of G chords. Lots of them have technical attributes which defines what type of G chord it is eg G dom7 etc.On this page you will find links to a series of pdf files of the basic arpeggios used in Gypsy Jazz and Jazz guitar playing in general.

The exercises are in both notation and tab. If you know nothing about theory of chord construction and intervals I highly recommend that you seek to learn something. I have made picking suggestions but not fingering due to the limitations of the programme used to create the notation. The chord shapes given are not necessarily "gypsy jazz" type shapes, instead I have gone for chords strictly made up of the chord tones of the arpeggios, e. I have stuck to giving the arpeggios in the common keys for gypsy jazz, but of course you should apply them to other keys!

Just wondering what are the chords at the start. I know it starts with Cm, but the other two chords are like Dm an Bm however with a sort of missplaced note if you will.

Decoding Django’s Gypsy Chords

Do you have any suggestions for comping a track like this or how to play the bass line on guitar? OK, thank you so much! I needed to spend some time with the guitar today and this little item was very interesting. What I wound up doing was taking all my Berklee fingerings for harmonic minor and raising the 4th. Listen to the bass. It is moving nowhere and stays in C minor.

Of course you can play any combination of notes from the scale simultaneously on top of it, but this gives only the feeling of having fun above a pedal note. Very nice, fresh and haunting sound.
